On the Literary Judgment of Fronto (Eloq. 1, 2)
Abstract
The paper deals with a passage from the book “De eloquentia” (1, 2) by M. Cornelius Fronto that is most probably addressed to his pupil Marcus Aurelius. The author discusses attributes given by Fronto to four Latin poets: “In poetis <aut>em quis ignorat ut gracilis sit Lucilius, Albucius aridus, sublimis Lucretius, mediocris Pacuvius, inaequalis Accius, Ennius multiformis?” The article is to answer the question whether these adjectives denote special features of the poets or are they to be understood in terms of genera dicendi. The author comes to a conclusion that gracilis, sublimis and mediocris refer to the three main styles of oratory while aridus is rather a defect of the plain style. Inaequalis and multiformis are also to be seen in the context of employment of genera dicendi.
