The role of Greek words in the letters of Sidonius Apollinaris
Abstract
Article deals with Greek words, which are widely used in the letters of Sidonius (more than 250 words in 148 letters). Some of them are “termini technici” of different areas of knowledge — from literature and philosophy to astrology, some are related to the life of the Christian church contemporary to Sidonius. The roles of these words are different: some words are just neutral, used in their common meaning, some, especially in a phrase with other grecisms, form some expressive constructions (asyndeton, parallelism), or create ironic or, on the contrary, elevated atmosphere. Greek terms, related to the pagan literal tradition of classical past, are used to preserve it in the age of prevailing christianity and at the time of barbarian conquest.
