On the Derivational Model of the Latin cauda

It is suggested in this paper that Latin cauda ‘tail’ is a derivative of a not attested verb of the 3rd conjugation *cavere ‘to hit’ and belongs to the same derivational pattern as fluidus, rapidus, cupidus, vividus. The basic meaning of cauda ‘tail’ might have been ‘hitting’.
